Easter Evening

I didn't dye any eggs.

My father passed away on Easter Sunday in the evening. I didn't know, but his father also passed away on Easter Sunday. He and his mother shared the same birthday. His 87th birthday was last Saturday. He died the next day.

So no eggs. More travel.

People are wonderful, but I may never eat ham again. Anyone need some ham?

Mom is holding up very well. She has a whole parish to lean on.

They love ham, apparently.

Someday soon, I'll be back home.

  3. Sr. MM,

My sympathies are with you. No matter how long the illness or infirmity, we're never ready to lose a parent. May your father feel the loving embrace of the Lord. Could there be a more fitting day than Easter to pass on to eternal life? I will pray for your father and your family tonight. As for the ham, you might be on your own on that one. ;-) How curious it is in our culture, especially in the Midwest, that the minute someone dies, the ladies start cooking. The grieving are smothered in casseroles, or in your case, ham, when they feel like eating the least. I guess it makes folks feel less helpless or something.

    God bless you.

And know we will miss you. Do come back, even you just feel like ranting a little. You don't have to be humorous all the time...

Wow. You've had a lot on your plate, Sister. I will pray for fortitude and peace for you and your mother tonight in our rosary intentions - and I will pray for the soul of your dear father.

My grandfather passed away on a Good Friday - years ago.

    It's always so hard.

At least in this Easter Season we are reminded of the Resurrection, which is pretty cool...to say the least. :o)

Oh, Sister, I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm a frequent lurker here--never posted before today--but just wanted you to know that prayers are headed your way from Fort Worth. I'll remember you and your parents this evening at Mass.
As far as the ham...does Teddy like ham? I imagine that eating nothing but for a long time wouldn't be good for him, but perhaps a little?
Look on the bright side. It's ham, and it's identifiable as such. Around here, people tend to bring something called "barbecue." When you ask "Barbecued what?" they just look at you blankly and say "barbecue."
Hope that gives you at least a small smile! God bless.

  39. leigh, the ladies know that the bereaved need to eat but aren't smart enough to figure it out. When my dad died, a neighbor's mom came to my mom's house with calico beans, handed them over, told me the temp. and amount of time to cook for and I put them in the oven. Then we ate. We hadn't felt hungry and didn't have what it took to cook. This is why the ladies bring things over.

SMM can always freeze the ham. Or make scalloped potatoes or barley soup with it.

  40. Sister,

I'm so sorry about your loss. It doesn't matter whether you expect it, it's still a huge shock to lose your dad. Over time there will be a reduction in grief, but expect to be sad at random in the future. For me it can be something as random as hearing geese, because goose hunting was one of my dad's favorite things.

I am sorry for your loss, but glad for the Easter reminder of the resurrection. My grandmother died Easter morning when she was 88. I think she held on *specifically* to rise with Christ.

I am an Orthodox Christian, and my priest told me that the dream of every priest is to die in the altar on Bright Monday...which many priests have done. There is something about it...

I am sorry for your loss.

"May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.

Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us."

  78. Sister, I am sorry to hear about your loss. Was away for a while and just saw this.

Your mother probably needs you more than she lets on.

Shortly after my own father died, I received one of those fundraiser letters from a religious order. In it was a card with a quote on it that helped me a lot. Maybe it will mean something to you, or to someone else reading this: "Our loved ones are no further from us than God, and God is very near."

May our compassionate Mother comfort you and your Mom, and quiet your pain.
