Clown Corner

Our Sunday was in the 'no good deed goes unpunished' category. One of our parishoners is mentally disabled and he is a clown. I mean an actual clown in a clown suit. He makes balloon animals at the local mall. In the 'a lid for every pot category he also has a girlfriend. Sister St. Aloysius discovered that we were all headed in that general direction and offered to give them a lift. So far so good.

Traffic was unbelievable. There is a point on some Sundays where everyone is going to whatever thing is going on, and on this day, it was people going to meet friends to watch football, baseball, and a whole section of town was blocked off for some sort of charity/illness walk. So all of the big traffic that would have been big traffic in any case, became huge traffic all squeezed on one end of town.

The Lord's Day.

We dropped them off for the clowning and later we went to pick them up again. So we had to do this twice.

Normally, heavy traffic is a not only a good opportunity for suffering, but a good opportunity for at least one of us who doesn't have to concentrate on driving to get in a rosary. But with guests in the car that was not happening.

After successfully snagging them on a corner we drove home. I always think of that little poem, "Home again, home again, jiggetty jig!" Is there more to that poem? There must be. So glad to be back home on an early Sunday evening, for supper, a little prayer and meditation, some herbal tea.....

"My bag!" The lid had forgotten a plastic bag full of I don't know what at the pick up spot. We had to go back so that she could find it. At this point, the drop off and pick up and go back and come back home again of the clown and his friend had taken up pretty much the entire day.

I would rather do my suffering during the week and have Sunday off for a day of rest, but suffering doesn't work that way. Somebody up there likes me, because Monday was a lovely day from start to finish. Welcome to suffering. And welcome to a lovely day.

And then I got a message over at the shop from the mother of a little 5 year girl whose immune system causes the child's hair to fall out. She was looking for a patron saint and I hooked her up with St. Agnes and St. Bernadette. Of course, St. Bernadette has the added advantage of bringing Our Lady of Lourdes with her wherever she goes. And to my surprise, St. Agnes inexplicably had St. Thomas Aquinas on the back.

I can't imagine why. But the mother was pleased because St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of students and surely this child will have some challenges in school.

Then the mother sent me this article.

I am so pleased! Have I joined the scientific community? I'd like to think I have!

Things have been so hunky dory, I'll have to dig up some penance on my own.

Perhaps if you had not helped they may have gotten lost or someone else could have taken advantage or them. Maybe you were their savior that day.

You never know what act of kindness had averted trouble. It may have been part of the plan.

To market, to market to buy a fat pig;
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog;
Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.

To market, to market, to buy a plum cake;
Home again, home again, market is late.
To market, to market, to buy a plum bun;
Home again, home again, market is done.

To market, to market, a gallop a trot,
To buy some meat to put in the pot;
Three pence a quarter, a groat a side,
If it hadn't been killed it must have died

I am the mom in this post! How pleasantly surprised I am to have made your wonderful blog! I cannot thank you enough for all your help in finding saints for my daughter. I feel like you have introduced us to some new family friends. God Bless you, and thank you for the work you do on this blog and in your shop.

Hi Sr. I just love your blog! I have a saint-match question for you, if you do not mind. I am expecting our 8th child in June (we just found out) and I'm worried we will not be able to pick out a name for him/her. It has gotten harder every time! Can you recommend a patron saint for choosing a child's name?

Sister, I have a question for you. Is there a patron saint of unborn children? I pray every day for children who may never get the chance to be born, but then my mind drifts and I am praying for the souls of those lost through abortion or miscarraige. I would love to have a saint to pray with.

Sister, to which saint can I pray for someone who I love very much but who is unjustly prejudiced against the Church?

Sister MM: My 2nd grade son recently visited the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters in Wheaton, IL in honor of All Saints Day. I met the most delightful elderly nuns and I knew I had to get a picture of two of them in particular and share it with you. Who says nuns don't have a sense of humor?

God bless you this All Saints Day!

Thank you sister for giving those two mentally disabled people a ride. As the mom of a four year old girl with Down Syndrome it makes me happy to hear that people can be so helpful. God bless you and I hope your next Sunday will be a bit more restful. (By the way this post makes me wonder who oversees how those two make it safely to their clown job in the first place?)

Sister, I'm in a quandary...There's a young man in my confirmation class. He's looking for a patron saint. He is an avid snowboarder...and he insists that this is in no way the same as skiing! So, St. Bernard and even JP II are out (although I assured him that if JP II were young today, he would definitely be a snowboarder!) Can you help me out please?

Hi SMM,

What, if anything, is St. Agnes of Assisi (Clare's younger sister) the patron saint of?

Matthew, I would recommend St Maximilian Kolbe. He considered the Miraculous Medal to be the "bullet" against the enemy of our souls, and considered wearing it to be mandatory in prayer for the conversion of souls. He added to the Miraculous Medal Prayer ("Mary, conceived without sin, pray for those who have recourse to thee,") the following:
"...and those who have no recourse, especially the enemies of the Church, and those whom we recommend to thee."

making the whole prayer;
"Mary, conceived without sin, pray for those who have recourse to thee, and those who have no recourse, especially the enemies of the Church, and those whom we recommend to thee." I pray this myself for the conversion of loved ones adding at the end "Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us and for {intention}"
